Dear Tim,

I am writing to you for help regarding a problem I have with vermin infestation of my under floor insulation. I rang the Building Display Centre in East Melbourne, explained my problem, and they suggested I contact you.

In late 2002 I decided to polish the baltic pine floor boards in my home. The house is weatherboard and approximately 70 years old.

I found that although the floor looked great, it was quite cold in the winter. I contacted our local building supplier and he suggested that I use fibreglass insulation batts.

During the summer of 2003/4, I installed R1.5 pink fibreglass insulation batts between the floor joists and held them up by fixing chicken wire across the underside of the joists.

Unfortunately during the following winter of 2004, a section of about 2 sq metres of the fibreglass insulation became a resting place for rats. I removed the insulation batts from this area and laid poison on the bearers. As I had not experienced this problem in the house before, I also checked the fibreglass insulation in the ceiling to see if I had the same problem. It seemed to be clear, I could not find any evidence of rats, mice or possums there.

About 6 months later the infestation returned again. I had to leave poison on the bearers again. I have removed the fibreglass insulation from the area, but will need to replace it soon. I have included some photos of the insulation and the mess the rats have made in the insulation.

I am a carpenter by trade and I am keen to find out more about your product, Concertina Foil Batts, regarding its insulation capabilities, how it is fixed under the floor, its cost, and of course its resistance to vermin.

Kind regards

BRIAN O'DWYER
